Types of Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injuries are often divided into two kinds by doctors:

  • Closed injuries
  • Open injuries.

Closed injuries are TBIs without a skull fracture, whereas, open injuries happen if your skull bone is broken/punctured, and your brain is exposed. Many different types of TBI may take place such as:

  • Concussions

One of the most common types of TBI that occurs when a specific force impacts our head. As a result, the brain may collide with the skull, causing different types of long-lasting symptoms.

  • Contusions

A contusion is akin to a brain bruise, signifying mild bleeding. A coup-contrecoup injury, a specific type of discoloration, involves damage to two brain areas.

  • Brain hemorrhages

A brain hemorrhage is uncontrolled bleeding on or within the brain. Subarachnoid hemorrhages happen around the brain, while intracerebral hemorrhages occur within the brain tissue.

  • Intracranial hematomas

Hematomas are blood collections outside vessels. In the brain, large hematomas, if untreated, can result in severe injury or death. Various types of brain hematomas exist such as:

  • Epidural hematomas
  • Subdural hematomas
  • Intracerebral hematoma.
  • Coup-contrecoup brain injury

A coup-contrecoup injury, a severe type of traumatic brain injury, consists of two distinct injuries: the coup injury beneath the impact point and the contrecoup injury on the opposite side of the brain.

  • Diffuse axonal injury

Diffuse axonal injuries, among the most severe traumatic brain injuries, result from the brain’s shaking or twisting within the skull, causing tearing of the long connecting fibers (axons) and functional loss.

  • Penetrating brain injury

Penetrating brain injuries, typically caused by objects like bullets, can lead to seizures and an increased likelihood of post-traumatic epilepsy compared to other brain injury types.

  • Second impact syndrome

Known as recurrent traumatic brain injury (TBI), it happens when a second brain injury follows the first, often resulting in more severe damage and potential health consequences. Immediate medical attention is crucial.

Like any other place, Las Vegas is not immune to different types of brain injuries, which can vary in their causes, symptoms, and impact. Understanding the diversity of these injuries underscores the importance of seeking legal and medical guidance when faced with such challenging situations to ensure the best possible path to recovery and justice.
